Standalone Location: The Forbidden Delicacy

Before we start out on another venture, I think it’s time we collected some information. And have a nice meal. A nice hearty stew filled with tender meat and exquisite spices. With a side of steamed dumplings. And fried rice. Oh, and we can’t forget to order des- oops I may have forgotten breakfast today. It’s fine, there is still plenty of time for brunch. Anyway, today we are going to visit The Forbidden Delicacy.

Tucked away in a space between worlds lies the restaurant known as The Forbidden Delicacy. Patrons filter in from all worlds to sample foods they never would otherwise, foods that normally would carry a heavy price. You’ve likely heard warning tales of eating food grown in the underworld, drinking divinely infused nectars, or accepting even a single piece of cheese from a tricksome fey. I still think it’s rude to trick people using food. After all, meals are a sacred time. But, The Forbidden Delicacy resides in a space unclaimed by other worlds, and therefore lies outside their laws. Which means we can eat our fill without worry! Here are a few highlights I learned from the last time I visited.

  • There are no doors to The Forbidden Delicacy, and there is but a single door leading out. The first step to gain entrance is to be hungry. Like stomach grumbling hungry. Next, close your eyes and think of what you most desire to eat at that moment. Let that desire fill your mind and shut out all other thoughts and feelings. Once the feeling turns to a gentle heat spread across your hold body, open your eyes and boom! You will find yourself in the main dining room, right next to the host.
  • Angels, hooded reapers, fluttering pixies, and more all find their way to The Forbidden Delicacy. While present, no creature can have their soul, reaped, bound, or otherwise claimed by another creature or world. Any food consumed that normally has magical repercussions (both the positive and negative ones), has those effects nullified. Poisons are rendered inert, and patrons allergies vanish while within the walls of The Forbidden Delicacy.
  • It is run by twins named Alexander and Maria. They are both human as far as anyone can tell and share an identical birthmark in the shape of a feathered wing on their temple. They have been the owners as long as anyone can remember and some worlds have records of the restaurant existing for millennia. It is rare to see the two of them at the same time. One will always be found in the main dining room, smiling pleasantly behind the bar. The other will be off ‘making business deals’, but no one knows who they meet with or where.
  • The head chef of The Forbidden Delicacy is known as Spoon. They will freely admit that isn’t their real name and in fact they hate spoons. Further questioning only leads to increasingly baffling answers. No one is sure what Spoon is either. Their form changes each day, and insist that their current form is the form they have always had. Given how long the restaurant has been around, everyone expects Spoon to one day have to take a form they have before. In fact, there is a whole society dedicated to it who have at least one member present in the restaurant at all times.
  • The floors, chairs, and benches all appear to be made from fossilized wood. But there are no signs of tool marks or that they have been assembled. It is as though they grew into their forms naturally. The countertops and tables are made from an obsidian like stone with marbled blue-gray and black.
  • The entire restaurant is lit from an unknown light source that casts no shadows. For some reason, lights brought into the space will cast shadows as though the room was in darkness. Many of their patrons found the lack of shadows unsettling, so Alex and Maria have placed lights throughout most of the restaurant. Though something does still feel off. I could have sworn the shadows vanished out of the corner of my eye when I was there.
  • The restaurant spreads outward from the main dining room. Rather than spreading like a planned expansion, the halls and rooms expand organically like slowly expanding veins.
  • To leave the restaurant all you have to do is walk out the main double doors behind where you first arrived. The door always returns you to where you had been before, exactly ten seconds later. It is possible to leave with items acquired from other patrons, but items taken from the restaurant itself will return to The Forbidden Delicacy.

I could go on. I want to go on. But like I said I forgot breakfast and need to eat something soon. Not to mention that a picture is worth a thousand words! Okay, yes technically we won’t be looking at a picture, we will be in the restaurant itself. Which should make it worth more words like ten thousand. Or maybe a hundred thousand. Or- maybe we should go get food now. Yeah, I like that idea. Until next time friends.

Onward to adventure!
