Setting Idea: Vanishing Town

Greetings travelers,

Today we put our thinking caps on and dream up some delightful new locations. We will reach deep into the pouch of culture. Sift through annals of ecology. Delve deep into the mines of creativity. Today we ask ourselves the time-honored question, what happens next?

Let me set the stage.

Our story begins in a town long settled. Where the people have long laid down their roots and none living can remember what came before them. Their festivals have been honored for generations. Secrets have been buried so deep that only the soil where they rest remembers they even exist. Life is peaceful. Or at least as peaceful as it can be. Then one day, the air becomes heavy as magic weaves together and spreads out across the entirety of the town. The ground trembles like it is a ship in a storm and as the power reaches a crescendo there is a moment of absolute darkness and silence for everyone in town As their senses return the look out to see an unfamiliar horizon and they realize that the entire town has been transported to a new location.

What in the world has just happened? And what happens next?

Let’s start with three main areas.

The Town

How do the townsfolk respond? Does this event cause the town’s previous hierarchy to break down and new factions to form? Or do the people find solace in what they’ve known and their communal bonds are strengthened in these hard times?

How do they react to the new landscape? Do they have anyone capable of scouting the surroundings? Is there anyone that could act as a diplomat when they encounter the native inhabitants?

What resources do they have that can help them adapt to this new place?

What resources are they lacking?

Did the teleportation damage the town? If so, what was damaged and what was spared?

The place they arrived

How do the locals feel about the new town that arrived? Are they cautious, fearing these newcomers are invaders? Or are they excited by a town magically appearing?

What is the landscape like? Is it a different biome than where the town came from? Is there anything unusual or magical about the area?

Is this a region that the townsfolk might recognize or have heard of? Is it even on the same world?

Where they came from

What, if anything, replaced the town in its original location?

What caused the town to disappear in the first place? Is it a feature of the landscape that the townsfolk didn’t realize? Did someone do this on purpose? Is it a remnant of an ancient magical ritual that took place in the past?

Are there people or organizations actively trying to locate where the town went?

How does this affect the local region? Did the town provide a vital resource or service that is now gone? Were there any notable individuals in the town such as a powerful lord or legendary warrior who are now missing?

There are too many ways I want to answer these questions. Maybe I should use a randomizer for the original and new destinations to force myself to force myself to make a decision. Or… maybe I could do all of my ideas! Every single combination of them and make it into a challenge to answer this prompt one hundred times. And then set them all in the same world and run a D&D game in that world. By my calculations it would only take me- oh… oh wow that’s a long time. Maybe I’ll rethink ‘100 worlds, 1 prompt’ and just do a couple. This time at least. Anyway, as always,

Onward to adventure!
